We hope to be back at Westdale Secondary School for next year’s Art Battle.

Enjoy this slideshow gallery of submissions – grouped according to the work of art that inspired each piece and presented in no particular order. The four inspirational works were selected by Mirielle from the McMaster Museum of Art’s permanent collection of approximately 6,000 objects.

Inspired by Émile Bernard (French, 1868-1941) Still Life

Emile Bernard painting from McMaster Museum of Art collection — #1 Émile Bernard (French, 1868-1941) Nature morte à la tasse et à la coupe de fruits 1887 Oil on canvas. Levy Bequest Purchase. French post-impressionist painter and writer. He characterizes his paintings with use of rich, pure, flat colours and heavy outline that gives the impression of medieval stained glass.

Inspired by Gord Smith (Canadian, born 1937) sculpture

Gord Smith sculpture, McMaster Museum of Art collection — #2 Gord Smith (Canadian, born 1937) Grinder, 1959 Welded steel. Gift of Miriam Shiell. Trained as an architect and engineer, Smith rose to prominence for his geometric metal and wood sculptures in the 1960s. His was commissioned to create a monumental work “Canada Screen” for Expo 67.

Inspired by John Howlin (Canadian, born England, 1941 – 2006) painting

John Howlin painting, McMaster Museum of Art collection — #3 John Howlin (Canadian, born England, 1941 – 2006) Victory Jump, 1984 Acrylic on canvas. Gift of Mr. Georges Loranger. Following a group show in London in 1963, he and the three artists exhibiting with him were dubbed, ‘The impact Makers.” This painting incorporates the use of illusion, geometric shapes, vibrant and complementary colours and lines.

Inspired by Théodule (Augustin) Ribot (French, 1823-1891) painting

Theodule Ribot painting McMaster Museum of Art collection — #4 Théodule (Augustin) Ribot (French, 1823-1891) Les Filles du Peintre Lisant Oil on canvas. Gift of Herman H. Levy. Ribot painted realistic domestic scenes, still lifes, portraits, as well as religious subjects. He liked to for paint directly from nature using strong contrasts between light and dark, as in this painting.
