Call for Artists: Online Exhibition and Publication

The McMaster Museum of Art in partnership with Nia Centre for the Arts is seeking forms of expression from Black Canadian creatives for a collaborative online exhibition about contemporary collage. The group exhibition, for presentation beginning in the Spring of 2021, will be accompanied by a printed feature in PITCH magazine, a Hamilton-based independently run Black arts publication.
We are asking artists to submit proposals or original works in diverse mediums that speak to the curatorial theme – focusing on cut and paste methods, mashups, remix culture and its relationship to the Black diaspora. Some examples include: poetry and experimental prose, moving images, gifs or looped animations, videos, live/online performances, sound files, audio tracks, as well as documentation of 2-D and 3-D pieces, including assemblage and photomontage.
Artwork can be individually or collaboratively produced, and completed in the last five years. Entries must be original in concept, composition, and execution. All mediums are accepted but must be able to be digitally represented. This is an opportunity to get creative in representing your artwork (physical or not) in the digital space.
The exhibition will be curated by Hamilton designer and visual artist Stylo Starr, whose collage works reformulate notions of beauty using images of Black women found primarily in vintage magazines.
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
Please apply by emailing your submissions to museum@mcmaster.ca with the subject heading “Remix Submission” and include the following:
- Project Statement (250 words max)
- Website (if you have one), social media account handles, and contact information
- Artist bio (150 words max)
- Up to 5 digital images of proposed or representative artworks (JPG or PNG) with image list indicating artist name, title, medium, date, and brief description. Maximum 5 MG per image for the online presentation
- Video (.MOV or .MP4), GIF or audio files (.WAV or .MP3) – 15 mins max each
- Word document or pdf with proposed text pieces (2000 words max)

Selected artists will be notified by: Monday, January 4, 2021
Artist fees will be paid according to CARFAC standards. Applicants who do not adhere to the preceding criteria will not be accepted.
Please note: due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the McMaster Museum of Art and Nia Centre are currently closed to the public until further notice.
ABOUT THE CURATOR
Stylo Starr is a visual alchemist based in Hamilton, Ontario. She has a BFA from Brock University and studied design at Mohawk College. A founding member and outreach organizer for COBRA (the Coalition of Black and Racialized Artists), she has worked with varied organizations including Centre[3] for Artistic and Social Practice, Hamilton Arts Council, and McMaster University (curating the 2020 BFA graduation exhibition). Starr’s work has been featured on public installations, publications and apparel and exhibited at the Art Gallery of Hamilton and Art Gallery of Burlington.
