M(M)A Announces New Mentee and Mentor in the BIPOC Curatorial Mentorship Program

McMaster Museum of Art’s BIPOC Curatorial Mentorship Program was initiated in 2019 with the goal of fostering a generation of critically engaged art practitioners who are committed to decolonizing traditional museological practices and formulating thought-provoking exhibitions and programming. This Fall 2023, with support from the Department of Canadian Heritage, the museum has appointed Rick Monture a mentor in the museum’s BIPOC Curatorial Mentorship Program.
Rick Monture is a member of the Mohawk nation, Turtle Clan, from Six Nations of the Grand River Territory. He is also an Associate Professor in the Department of English & Cultural Studies and Indigenous Studies at McMaster University where he teaches classes on Haudenosaunee history and oral traditions, Indigenous literature, and Bob Dylan. Rick was the Director of the McMaster Indigenous Studies Program from 2014-2017 and the Acting Director of the McMaster Indigenous Research Institute from 2017-2018. He currently holds a Community Scholar position with Six Nations Polytechnic and is a former member of the Steering Committee that established the Deyohahage / Indigenous Knowledge Centre, based at Six Nations.
Rick will be mentoring Carole Monture, a graduate of McMaster University with a Bachelor of Arts in Indigenous Studies. Carole Monture is Kanien’kehá ka (Mohawk) Wolf clan from Six Nations of the Grand River Territory. She is currently the Climate Leadership Coordinator at Indigenous Climate Action where she facilitates a popular education style community workshop about climate change by and for Indigenous people. She is a volunteer with Protect the Tract – a Haudenosaunee led project that conducts research, policy development and develops capacity for civil engagement to exercise sovereignty through the promotion of land stewardship over the Haldimand Tract.
Carole will provide exhibition assistance for the production and launch of an upcoming exhibition at the McMaster Museum of Art associated with the Protect the Tract project. We are very excited to announce that the Protect the Tract exhibition will be on view at the museum in January 2024.
The museum is very grateful to have been awarded a major Museum Assistance Program (MAP) grant from the Department of Canadian Heritage, the Canadian Heritage Grant for Community Support, Multiculturalism and Anti-Racism Initiatives (CSMARI) to support the 2022/2023 and 2023/2024 mentorship programs.
Lancé en 2019, le programme de mentorat PANDC du McMaster Museum of Art vise à former une génération de travailleur·se·s culturels engagé·e·s, qui sont déterminé·e·s à décoloniser les pratiques muséales traditionnelles, à travailler dans une optique de critique institutionnelle, à développer des expositions et une programmation qui favorisent la réflexion. Cet automne 2023, avec le soutien du ministère du Patrimoine canadien, le Musée a nommé Rick Monture comme mentor dans le cadre son programme de mentorat de commissaires d’exposition PANDC.
Rick Monture est membre du clan de la Tortue de la Nation mohawk des Six Nations de la rivière Grand. Il est également professeur agrégé au Département d’anglais, d’études culturelles et d’études autochtones de l’Université McMaster, où il donne des cours sur l’histoire et les traditions orales des Haudenosaunee, la littérature autochtone, et Bob Dylan. Rick a été directeur du programme d’études autochtones de 2014 à 2017 et directeur intérimaire de l’Institut de recherche autochtone de l’Université McMaster de 2017 à 2018. Il occupe actuellement un poste de chercheur à l’École polytechnique des Six Nations et a précédemment fait partie du comité directeur responsable de la création du Deyohahage / Indigenous Knowledge Centre, sur le territoire des Six Nations.
Rick agira à titre de mentor de Carole Monture, titulaire d’un baccalauréat en études autochtones de l’Université McMaster. Carole Monture est membre du clan du Loup de la Nation kanien’kehá ka (mohawk) des Six Nations de la rivière Grand. Elle est actuellement coordinatrice du leadership climatique chez Indigenous Climate Action, où elle a lancé un atelier communautaire à vocation éducative sur le changement climatique, animé par et pour les peuples autochtones. Elle est bénévole pour Protect the Tract – un projet dirigé par les Haudenosaunee, qui se consacre à la recherche, à l’élaboration de politiques et au développement de l’engagement civique pour favoriser l’exercice de la souveraineté par la promotion de la gestion des terres de la concession Haldimand.
Carole participera à la mise sur pied et au lancement d’une exposition en lien avec Protect the Tract au McMaster Museum of Art. Nous sommes très heureux d’annoncer que l’exposition Protect the Tract sera présentée en nos murs en janvier 2024.
Le Musée est très reconnaissant d’avoir reçu une importante subvention du Programme d’aide aux musées ainsi qu’une subvention du Programme de soutien aux communautés, au multiculturalisme et à la lutte contre le racisme, toutes deux du ministère du Patrimoine canadien, en soutien au programme de mentorat 2022-2023 et 2023-2024.
