On Roman Glass and McMaster’s Antiquities Collection

Owen Phillips, a graduate student in the Department of Classics at McMaster University, recently presented a fascinating talk about ancient Roman glass, an intriguing window into ancient daily life.

His talk was presented as a complement to the exhibition which he co-curated with Dr. Spencer Pope, also from the Department of Classics. The exhibition of Antiquities and Numismatics features a wide variety of objects from the ancient Mediterranean dating from c. 1400 BC to c. 300 AD.
The Museum’s collection of antiquities encompasses over 200 objects; pottery, glass, carvings and jewelry from Mediterranean cultures, China and Japan, dating from the Bronze Age (beginning around 3600—3200 BC) to the Modern era. It also includes approximately 700 coins from the Mediterranean World, The Americas, Asia, and Europe, dating from the 8th century BC to the 20th century.
This talk was present as part of Hamilton Lifelong Learning Week and McMaster’s Spotlight on the Arts Festival.
