Academic Outreach
The M(M)A is an educational resource for all postsecondary learners. The exhibitions and collections can complement learning through custom-designed interdisciplinary programs. Our approach to learning with visual art of all types, from historic to contemporary, is with a critical lens to build awareness of the interconnectivity of the past, present and future, and to understand the challenges of institutional and ideological boundaries.

The M(M)A contributes directly to the academic mission of the University by providing visual art-based education through experiential learning opportunities for learners of all ages. The M(M)A provides outreach beyond the university through public partnerships and learning opportunities.

The M(M)A Education Team is dedicated to fostering meaningful, inclusive, and inspiring experiences for McMaster University and its surrounding communities. We do this through object-based learning with visual art, cultivating a space where people love to be, learn, and engage in transformational conversations that promote independent and critical thinking.
The M(M)A Education Team will lead innovative museum education by delivering experiential, curriculum-integrated programming that highlights the M(M)A’s art collection and exhibitions, meets the evolving needs of student learning, and embraces art as a unique way of knowing. Together, we strive to make the museum a dynamic hub of learning, creativity, and connection, where art becomes a catalyst for dialogue, discovery, and meaningful change in our communities.
The Art of Seeing™ is a visual literacy program developed by the McMaster University Department of Family Medicine and the McMaster Museum of Art in partnership to enhance and support professional competency in observation, communication, and compassion.
The program is offered to McMaster residents, faculty, staff, community leaders and businesses, and the wider public, and is tailored to suit each group’s needs.
