The McMaster Museum of Art is pleased to announce the appointment of Samuel de Lange to the position of Installation Officer as of July 19.

Sam comes to the M(M)A and Hamilton with a significant history of installation and preparatory experience across a variety of venues. With a BA in Studio, Art Theory & Art History from the University of Guelph, and a Masters of Fine Arts from the Glasgow School of Art, Sam’s comprehension of the artistic process, artists’ working methods and a legacy for the same, will be an important part of his knowledge base at the M(M)A. Moreover, his experience as a photography technician will serve the M(M)A well as we continue to grow a significant contemporary photography collection.

Since 2013, Sam has provided independent technician assistance and leadership at Oakville Galleries, Gardiner Museum of Ceramic Art, Art Museum at the University of Toronto, Blackwood Art Gallery, Museum of Contemporary Art (Toronto), Aga Khan Museum, Walter Phillips Gallery and Gallery Express —Fine Art Services (Toronto). As well, Sam has consulted on, and assisted with, various public art commissions in Canada and for the Canadian Pavillion at the Venice Biennale – experience that will support the M(M)A’s on-going public art practice.

Throughout the recruitment and interview process, with questions fashioned to elicit discussion around de-colonization, the 21st C museum and intentions specific to the Museum’s current Strategic Plan, Sam’s “commitment to non-oppressive practices in creating a supportive environment where ideas, individuals and communities are brought together through exhibitions,” repeatedly impressed the Hiring Committee! As we work toward institutional transformation at the M(M)A, we look forward to Sam’s contributions to this work.

With experience as an artist’s assistant, preparator, technician, fabricator, art handler and lead installer over the past 8 years, we are confident that Sam will be a game changer for the M(M)A! Please join us in welcoming him to the team!
