Museum of Art heads into virtual school classrooms

April 27, 2020

McMaster Museum of Art takes programs into virtual school classrooms

During the COVID-19 shutdown, McMaster Museum of Art’s education team are working closely with teachers in the Hamilton area to provide digital versions of its school programs to elementary and secondary schools.

These popular programs were developed for actual classroom visits last year. (See McMasterUTV’s video Creative Kids.)

“Though not without its challenges, moving online has been a dynamic and collaborative experience,” says Museum Education Officer Teresa Gregorio. “It’s also an opportunity. We’ve introduced some fun learning methods and project ideas that are only possible because of the new digital format.”

Currently, the Map Making program is being delivered at Strata Montessori School via a multi-session format on Zoom to enthusiastic students.

Adds Gregorio, “We’ve been able to tie in directly with their current work in the classroom and provide guided looking, discussion, and hands-on activities.”

From a series of unique video lessons to synchronous discussions and sharing via platforms like Zoom, the museum is able to connect with students and deliver engaging education programs. The specific programs being adapted to digital delivery include:

  • Science and the Principles of Art
  • Printmaking: Mass Communication on a Piece of Paper
  • Perspective: Math and Art Combine!
  • Colour, Light, and Impressionist Art
  • Map Making and Art
  • Land Art and Working with the Environment
