The McMaster Museum of Art proudly maintains, researches, builds, and exhibits the University’s art collection: 6000+ objects that encompass the history of art from the late 15^th to the 21^st century, and coins and antiquities from Mediterranean cultures and China. Recently, we developed an ambitious roster of traveling exhibitions with the support of the Government of Canada. These, combined with frequent loan requests for individual works, allow us to engage and share McMaster’s collection with a wider audience nationally and internationally.

Making Marks: Works on Paper

This exhibition of art from the collections of the McMaster Museum of Art (28 works of art) and the Judith & Norman Alix Art Gallery includes art by Eugene Delacroix, Raoul Dufy, Albrecht Dürer, Jean Dubuffet, George Grosz, David Hockney, Henry Moore and many more.

A Cultivating Journey: The Herman Levy Legacy

Representing one of the most important donations ever made to a university gallery in Canada, A Cultivating Journey presents five centuries of magnificent art from the McMaster Museum of Art’s Levy Collection and Bequest from Herman Herzog Levy. The exhibition includes 75 works from McMaster’s collection, including paintings by well-known artists such as Gustave Courbet, Camille Pissarro, Claude Monet and Vincent van Gogh. Next, A Cultivating Journey will travel to the Kelowna Art Gallery where it will be on view June 16 to October 28, 2018. The exhibition was first presented at the McMaster Museum of Art in Fall 2017.

Living, Building, Thinking: art & expressionism

The exhibition uses the German Expressionist collection from the McMaster Museum of Art to explore the development of Expressionism in art. This exhibition includes 90 works in all mediums, including examples of European art from the 16th century to the present day. Living Building Thinking was first presented at McMaster Museum of Art in Fall, 2016.

David Blackwood and Norval Morrisseau

January 20 – May 13, 2018

Three works from McMaster’s collection – 2 etching/aquatint prints by David Blackwood, given to McMaster by Farley and Claire Mowat; and a 1965-67 painting by Norval Morrisseau Mishipeshoo (water spirit), a gift of Dr. Paul R. MacPherson – are part of this exhibition which encourages visitors explore their relation to water through narrative.

Liz Magor

at Musée d’art moderne et d’art contemporain (MAMAC)

Liz Magor’s work Banff Chair, 1991, is currently on view as part of a solo exhibition of her work at Musée d’art moderne et d’art contemporain Nice, France. The exhibition runs 18 November 2017 to 13 May 2018. Throughout 2016 and 2017, it was on view as part of the touring exhibition Liz Magor: Habitude, at Musee d’art contemporain de Montreal, Migros Museum fur Gegenwartskunst, Zurich, Kunstverein, Hamburg.

Daphne Odjig

niigaanikwewag brings together the work of senior, mid-career, and emerging female Indigenous artists. For the exhibition, McMaster has loaned a painting by Daphne Odjig (Ojibway-Odawa, 1919 – 2016), Secure in Mother’s Arms, 1982, Gift of Dr. Paul R. MacPherson, 2012.
