Shelley Niro and Shelagh Keeley are 2017 GG Arts Award Winners!

The winners of the 2017 Governor General’s Awards in Visual and Media Arts were announced this morning. They are:

Michèle Cournoyer, animation filmmaker, Montreal
Mike Hoolboom, filmmaker, Toronto
Shelagh Keeley, visual artist, Toronto
Glenn Lewis, visual artist, Vancouver
Landon Mackenzie, painter, Vancouver
Philip Monk, curator, writer, Toronto (Outstanding Contribution Award)
Shelley Niro, multimedia artist, Brantford, Six Nations Of The Grand River
Pamela Ritchie, jewelry artist, Halifax (Saidye Bronfman Award)

We are especially delighted to see visual artists Shelagh Keeley and Shelley Niro receiving this award. We’ve had the great honour of working with both of these artists over the years on exhibitions and have acquired their works for McMaster’s permanent collection.

McMaster’s collection boasts one untitled work by Shelley Niro, on a 50 foot wide tar paper roll, and twenty works by Shelagh Keeley from her series A Space for Breathing.

At this time, one of Shelley Niro’s photograph’s – shown at the top of this post – is on view at McMaster Museum of Art in the exhibition, Unapologetic: Acts of Survivance.
