Introducing Summer Sketching Thursdays

April 27, 2021

On April 8, McMaster Museum of Art education staff led the final Sketching Thursdays session of the academic year. Delivered virtually every Thursday since September, each free, drop-in class led participants through sketching sessions that were inspired by various works in the MMA collection.

Today, we’re showcasing the impressive work produced by Sketching Thursdays students, and announcing our new Summer Sketching Thursdays program.

Angela, a revisiting student, shared a collection of her work from various spring sessions. According to Angela, “I am a complete newbie to sketching, and this has been a fantastic experience for learning how to think and see in new ways. It has also made me keen to go to art galleries more once the pandemic subsides.”

Irene, another Sketching Thursdays student, is pleased to have integrated sketching into her life as a newfound hobby. “I am so happy that at 77 years old I am enjoying a new hobby. I started just trying a few things at 75 but am so glad to have had your instruction on perspective, colour etc.”

Below are two sketches from Irene and the work from the M(M)A collection which served as inspiration.

Did you miss Sketching Thursdays this spring? Good news! McMaster Museum of Art education staff will continue offering the Sketching Thursdays program for the McMaster community this summer!

Summer Sketching Thursdays will consist of 13 weeks of artistic inspiration and thematic explorations of art and sketching. Each session is designed to encourage skill building and reflection.

Unlike previous Sketching Thursdays, the first five weeks of the summer program will consist of a synchronous component, with the remaining sessions focused on asynchronous activities — encouraging participants to sketch within their own schedule and enjoy the outdoor opportunities that come with the warmer months. Catering to both those who are new to sketching and those with more experience, participants can either sketch independently or follow guidance from the session leaders.

Summer Sketching Thursdays will run each week beginning May 6 through to August 5 from 3:30-4:30PM via Zoom. McMaster participants can register via Avenue to Learn. Like always, each session is free!
