As the warming weather brings the Hamilton community outside, those strolling through Gage Park may notice a scattering of bright signs. The McMaster Museum of Art is very excited to announce this audio tour project from artist Lisa Myers, which encourages an appreciation for the surrounding nature, and brings attention to the absent presence of works originally planted in Gage Park by late Mi’kmaw artist Mike MacDonald. Scan the QR Code or visit this link to experience a reintroduction to one of Hamilton’s largest and most popular community parks.

Audio Tour (25 minutes)
To be toured in Gage Park
1000 Main St E, Hamilton, ON L8M 1N2
Finding what Grows is an audio tour that calls for remembering and learning from a garden artwork originally planted at Gage Park by the late Mi’kmaw artist Mike MacDonald.
Butterfly Reservation (2000) was planted in Gage Park for the public art exhibition Zone 6b: Art in the Environment (2000). Guiding listeners around the park, this audio walk invites you to consider the relationships and interconnection between land, humans, pollinators, and plants, always conscious of nearby extractive and refinement industries. Finding what Grows encourages collective remembering and learning about the presence of plants, how they adapt and also how they intervene.
This work was developed as part of enawendewin/relationships, an exhibition curated by William Kingfisher at the McMaster Museum of Art in 2021.
We gratefully acknowledge the support of Canada Council for the Arts. This is a temporary project made possible by the City of Hamilton’s Placemaking Grant Pilot Program with support from the Patrick J. McNally Charitable Foundation
