The McMaster Museum of Art is pleased to announce the purchase of 20 works of art, 19 of them by living artists working in Canada. The museum of art’s biannual acquisitions committee meeting, postponed from March due to COVID-19, met last week and unanimously approved all proposals put forward by the curatorial team. Acquisitions include contemporary artworks by Sonny Assu, Deanna Bowen, Catherine Blackburn, Denyse Thomasos and Shellie Zhang.

Mission accomplished: First art geocoin returns

In May of 2011, the McMaster Museum of Art joined the geocaching world and launched the first of nearly 100 Art Adventure Geocoins. Each coin is named for an artist in McMaster’s collection and tasked with a mission: to travel to the birthplace of the artist (or the equivalent distance) and then return home to McMaster.

New home on campus for TH&B’s Basin sculpture

March 5, 1819 is a recently acquired video work that considers the frantic final moments before Demasduit, a young Beothuk woman (later renamed Mary March) is captured by colonists at Red Indian Lake in Newfoundland.
