Thank you so much for posting this beautiful spring painting of Pissarro. I had not seen it in color before. The Pissarro Critical Catalogue published in 2005 obviously did not have access to a color reproduction and used a black-and-white photo instead.

The peacefulness of the countryside was to be shattered later that year by the Franco-Prussian War when a large number of Pissarro's works were destroyed. Since Durand-Ruel bought this from the artist in April 1872, this painting is one of the "survivors" of that war. How lucky for us. But we also have to wonder what masterpieces were lost that we will never see.

I'd like to feature this painting on my own blog at artbookannex.com which explores points of interest in Pissarro's paintings. I will, of course, point out that the painting can be seen at McMaster Museum. Thank you again for bringing it to my attention.

Thank you! I'm hoping that the Soutine painting you hope to see is Portrait of the Painter Richard X, c. 1916-1917, because it is also in this exhibition.

The Soutine landscape, however, is not on view right now.

I love your phrase "enjoying a sit."
Lovely description of this painting.

I look forward to taking you up on this invitation. Any chance your Chiam Soutine painting will be on show as well?

Best
